Did you know?

  • As many as 20%, over 500,000, of military service members, suffer from post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD).

  • From the year 2000 to 2017, there have been over 375,000 dramatic brain injuries (TBI) diagnosed in members of the military.

  • More than half of all service members have reported sexual assault or harassment while in the military.

  • Suicides committed by military members are at an all time high, with a 25% increase at the end of 2020.

It is unacceptable to allow our veterans to suffer alone in silence.

HSD aims to provide acknowledgement and acceptance, as well as a voice to veterans with disabilities.

The HSD Warrior Program aims to serve those who served our country in the armed forces, by providing the highest quality purpose-bred dog in both health and temperament. These service dogs are selected with the expectation that all of the requirements for service animals as defined by the ADA are met. They are able to cater to the unique needs of veterans with PTSD.

There will never be a charge to veterans for our Warrior Program.

This program will pair a started six-month old Service Puppy with a Warrior disabled by Post Traumatic Stress (PTSD). This training teaches the Warrior how to train their Service Dog, along with valuable Service Dog skills and providing both members of the team with a set of life changing skills.

The Warrior must:

  • successfully complete the online training course at Servicedog.Teachable.com

  • work with the HSD team for at least 5 days during “go home” training in Central Florida, including out and about in the community, where the Warrior will need to utilize their Service Dog.

  • document training and outings with their service dog, submitting the training log to HSD weekly

  • schedule and participate in follow up training after returning home

  • earn the following titles with their service dog:

    • AKC Canine Good Citizen

    • AKC Canine Good Citizen Urban

    • AKC Canine Good Citizen Advanced

    • AKC Novice Trick Dog

  • pass the HSD Public Access Assessment

  • train at least 3 tasks to mitigate their disability

Prior to Graduation, each Service Dog will receive a minimum of 240 hours of training with an additional minimum of 60 hours of public exposure and a minimum of 60 hours training in public places.

The Warrior and Service Dog team must successfully complete graduation requirements and recertifications.

Upon completion of HSD Training Program, the Warrior will feel comfortable teaching their Service Dog new commands and utilizing their Service Dog in public.
