Helping Dogs When They Need Us Most

Veterinary emergencies can happen without warning.

For a nonprofit caring for puppies, service dogs, breeding dogs, retired dogs, and dogs in training, unexpected medical expenses can quickly become overwhelming.

The HSD Medical & Emergency Fund helps Hope Service Dogs provide necessary medical care when unexpected veterinary needs arise.

Every dollar donated helps us be prepared when one of our dogs needs us most.

Bucky's Fund

A Legacy of Love

The HSD Medical & Emergency Fund began with a Golden Retriever named Bucky.

Bucky came to HSD with the hope that he would become a future service dog and breeding dog. Within a month of coming home, he became seriously ill and required emergency veterinary care.

He was ultimately diagnosed with multiple congenital conditions affecting his liver, heart, and hips.

Because of the severity of his conditions, Bucky could not become a service dog or breeding dog.

But he became something else.

He became part of the HSD family.

Bucky was the unofficial greeter at HSD. He loved everyone who came through our doors and made sure they knew it.

When Bucky became ill, a generous supporter stepped forward to help cover his medical expenses. After Bucky passed away, that supporter asked that the remaining gift become a fund to help other HSD dogs in need.

And so Bucky's Memorial Emergency Fund was born.

Bucky's life was short.

But his impact continues.

What the Fund Helps Support

Donations to the Medical & Emergency Fund may help HSD respond to unexpected veterinary needs, including:

• Emergency veterinary care

• Diagnostic testing

• Specialist consultations

• Surgery

• Treatment for unexpected illness or injury

• Medications

• Recovery and rehabilitation

• Other medically necessary care for dogs in HSD's care

Medical needs vary, and donations to the fund allow HSD to respond when unexpected situations arise.

Why an Emergency Fund Matters

A service dog organization has a responsibility to the dogs entrusted to its care.

Sometimes that means routine veterinary care.

Sometimes it means an unexpected emergency in the middle of the night.

Sometimes it means pursuing answers when something isn't right.

And sometimes, despite everything we do, the best decision is to provide comfort and compassionate end-of-life care.

Our commitment to our dogs doesn't end when their working career does—or when their future changes.

We care for them throughout their lives.

Bucky's Legacy

Bucky never became the service dog or breeding dog we had hoped he would become.

But he taught us all something important.

Every dog has value.

Every dog deserves to be loved.

And every dog deserves someone willing to stand beside them when things don't go according to plan.

The Medical & Emergency Fund allows Bucky's legacy to continue by helping us care for the dogs who need us today.

A Note About Medical Assistance

The HSD Medical & Emergency Fund supports dogs in HSD's care.

It is not currently a general veterinary assistance program for privately owned dogs or a general pet medical fund.

If HSD establishes a separate assistance program in the future, we'll provide eligibility requirements and an application here.

Bucky's Story Continues

Bucky's time with us was far too short.

But because of the generosity of the people who loved him, his story continues to help other dogs.
